Frequently Asked Questions

What is this project going to cost me?

We can't give you an exact price but we will give you an estimate based on past experience. Plan on spending $7,000 to $9,000 on this project. A lot of the price flucuation will be determined on what price you pay for a few of the more costly items. The motor can be a big expense depending on what motor you buy (see the following question about motors). Shock absorbers can be either fairly inexpensive or very expensive depending on your application for the car and desired ride quality. Custom seat, guages, any aftermarket motor accessories, etc. can add quickly to the cost of the project. One of the best ways to save money is to purchase the entire motorcycle when purchasing the motor. You can use other things from the motorcycle ie; guage cluster, brake, exhaust manifold, etc, and then you should be able to sell off what is left that you are not going to use on this project.

What motor do I use for this car.

This car is designed to use any of the street bike motors that are of an inline configuration and chain driven with the exception of the more recent larger displacement (1200cc, 1300cc, 1400cc) motors. These motors are just too large to fit into the motor cage without some modifications. The 1000cc and 1100cc motors seem to be the most popular to use for a sand car. If you are going to be driving mainly on hard pack dirt then 600cc to 900cc motors will do just fine. We suggest using a water cooled motor as it will be working harder in the car than it was designed to in the motorcycle and sometimes the air and oil cooled motors tend to run hot. From here it is a matter of personal preference as to the manufacturer ie; Suzuki, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Honda, etc. A good rule of thumb is to expect the car to be just as quick (0-60 mph) as the bike you take the motor from.

Will parts from other manufacturers fit this car?

You can adapt parts off of other car manufacturers or quads to fit this car but it will require some modifications. Some of the more popular adaptations are; spindles and hubs from a donor quad for the front end of the car, rear drive from other motorcycle driven car manufacturers, brakes and guage clusters from the donor bike you get the motor from.
